ARTIST STATEMENT
Janet Lee Sellers
My
work is most often done in individually created pieces that assemble together to create a unified whole. In my public
art, this represents each member - and each family - in the community, and the idea of community as a whole. Each
section is an individual form, each participates in the whole.
SCULPTURE:
My sculptural work cultivates the power of monolithic impact with human scale and organic forms.
Informed by the basic human need to at once feel grounded and also free, the large, stone-like
concrete forms are relieved with surface texture and shaped windows for the sky, solar light, and air to pass through.
Light on the forms -bold sunlight or the faint solar-powered night lights - create a play
of ever-changing shadow paintings on the textures and surfaces of both the artwork and its base ground.
Weather elements such as snow, ice, rain, fallen leaves and blossoms, even dust, interact with
my artwork and enhance the textural surfaces each day.
My hope is that you will enjoy and explore the adventure and
interplay of emptiness and concreteness in the forms and the textures as you view my work close up and from afar.
PAINTINGS:
My paintings inhabit the canvas or wall and are informed by my need to enter another dimension
of thinking while standing grounded in one place.
Be it with outdoor murals of monumental impact, or an intimate portrait, we all desire
to enter and exit realms of imagination and we can become fulfilled and refreshed in the blink
of an eye.
This kind of art experience compels me to make artwork that satisfies the
need to explore the truth of physical realities and spaces amid imaginary ones. We all have such a desire
to be an exporer of realities and spaces and imagination. I feel fortunate to be able to make my explorations visible
in my art for others to enjoy and make their own.
